Yugoslavia's Democratic Revolution
Angered by a Supreme Court decision that nullified elections in which most believe opposition candidate Vojislav Kostunica had been elected Yugoslav president, hundreds of thousands of people converged upon Belgrade on 5 October to show their displeasure. Crowds stormed the federal parliament and took over state television with little resistance from security forces, who often joined the demonstrators. Two days later, the court decision was reversed, President Slobodan Milosevic conceded defeat, and Kostunica was sworn in as the new president. A democratic revolution -- begun at the ballot box and enforced by the will of overwhelmingly peaceful citizens -- had taken place. Trace the events leading up to this momentous occurrence and follow each new development in the transition to post-Milosevic Yugoslavia with RFE/RL on this page.
