A. William SAMII is a Regional Analysis Coordinator with RFE/RL and has been with the company since 1998. He was a Fulbright Scholar in Tbilisi, Georgia. He earned his Ph.D. and M.Phil. at the University of Cambridge and his B.A. at the American University. Samii served as an infantryman/parachutist in the U.S. Army.
Samii's primary task is writing the weekly "RFE/RL Iran Report" and contributing to "RFE/RL Newsline." Samii's secondary task is writing for outside publications, participating in conferences and giving lectures, and providing commentary to news media.
Samii's research articles have appeared in "The Brown Journal of World Affairs;" "Middle East Journal;" "Middle East Policy;" "Middle Eastern Studies;" "Comparative Studies of South Asia, Africa, and the Middle East;" "Middle East Review of International Affairs (MERIA) Journal;" "Caspian Crossroads;" and "Silkroad -- A Journal of West Asian Studies." He has written book reviews for the "International Journal of Middle East Studies," "Middle East Journal," and "CIRA Bulletin." Samii's op-eds have appeared in "The International Herald Tribune," "The Los Angeles Times," "Wall Street Journal Europe," "The Jerusalem Post," "The Daily Star," "The Weekly Standard," and "Middle East Intelligence Bulletin."
Samii wrote chapters on domestic Iranian politics for "The Region at the Center of the World: Crises and Quandaries in the Contemporary Persian Gulf," Barry Rubin, ed. (London: Frank Cass, 2002), and on Iran's pre-revolutionary security activities in Lebanon for "Distant Relations: Iran and Lebanon in the Last 500 Years," Houchang Chehabi and Hassan Mniemnieh, eds. (London: I.B. Tauris, 2004). He wrote the Iran section for the forthcoming 6th edition of "Political Parties of the World" (John Harper Publishing, 2004) and contributed a chapter to the forthcoming "Nuclear Iran: Devising A Strategy Beyond Denial," Henry Sokolski and Patrick Clawson, eds. (U.S. Army War College, 2004).
