Saulius GIRNIUS is a free-lance contributor to "RFE/RL Newsline" from 2000 and the author of "Baltic States Report." He received a B.A. in mathematics and history from Case Western Reserve University in 1971, a M.S. in mathematics from Ohio State University in 1973, and a Ph.D. in history from the University of Chicago in 1981. His dissertation was entitled:"Russia and the Continental Blockade." In August 1981 he joined RFE/RL in Munich, Germany as a research analyst on the Baltic states in Radio Liberty, later shifting to Radio Free Europe. From 1988 to 1994 he was a senior reseach analyst at the RFE/RL Research Institute. In 1995-1997 he was a senior research analyst at the Open Media Research Institute. After its closing he moved to Lithuania where he worked as an advisor to Prime Minister Gediminas Vagnorius in 1997-1999.

He wrote many articles on current events in the Baltic states in "Radio Liberty Research Bulletin" in 1980-1984, in Radio Free Europe Research Baltic Area Situation Reports and Background Reports in 1984-1989, Report on the USSR in 1990-1991, "RFE/RL Research Report" in 1992-1994, and "Transition" in 1995-1997.
