RFE/RL IN THE NEWS: Web Editor Considers Belarus Motivations in 'Wall Street Journal-Europe' Op/Ed
(Washington, DC--March 6, 2008) In an Opinion article ("Belarusan 'Goodwill'") in today's issue of "The Wall Street Journal-Europe," RFE/RL English language Website Editor-in-Chief Luke Allnutt reviews possible motivations for Belarusian President Alyaksandr Lukashenka to authorize the release in recent weeks of a number of political prisoners. Allnutt argues that, given the challenges to economic stability Lukashenka faces in the wake of a 2007 Russian decision to hike the cost of natural gas, this might be an opportune time for the West to pursue engagement to "prod" a potentially "reform-minded Lukashenka" to build a more open Belarus.
